From the recording emmylou

About a dancer friend of mine when I lived in Albuquerque. She worked at The Silver Slipper and some nights we'd drive into the Sandia Mountains. Her crazy biker mom had left her at a commune in Colorado when she was only 11 which meant her life was much more tragic. Over the years, she's 'shown up' in many songs. I had this droning guitar note on the guitar/vocal that I wanted to keep throughout the song. Dave liked the idea. We seemed to know how this one was going to turn out from the beginning. His electric work and tones are dead on, always tasteful. One of my favorite cuts on the album.

Lyrics

You were waiting just outside the bar
Dancing in the parking lot like a movie star
You were asking if we could take a ride
Maybe up into mountains watch the city lights

And I…..I don’t know
But one way or another
I gotta let you go
I…..I don’t know
One way or another
I gotta let you go

You were moving like you had caught the wind
Like you never wanna touch the ground again
And I was watching like I was hypnotized
But I guess I always knew you were gonna fly

And I…..I don’t know
(But) one way or another
I gotta let you go
(And) I…..I don’t know
(But) one way or another
I gotta let you go…gotta let you go

Solo

You said you’re leaving but you don’t know when
And we could hang out for while just until it ends
But you know this city can feel so damn cold
And if you’re gone well there’ll be nothin’ left to hold

And I…..I don’t know
One way or another
I gotta let you go
And I…..I don’t know
One way or another
I gotta let you go
