From the recording emmylou
Originally written on an '87 Gibson SJ acoustic workhorse as more of a Waylon-style ballad. Dave and I wound up bumping it up to a mid-tempo. Dave added a running banjo lick throughout. His vintage Supro lap steel came in handy as well. Recorded at Flintland Studio.
Lyrics
I guess I need a nightcap
Something stronger than that
Something that’ll knock me off my feet
I guess I need a nightcap
Take my mind off what I had
Something goes down easy, don’t cut too deep
Guess I need a little help
Something that’ll turn down the neon lights
Cause it’s gettin’ hard to tell
If something’s gonna turn out alright
So I need a little help
To help get me through the night
I wish I had a cold heart
Made of stone right from the start
Before this bottle got a hold of me
I wish I had a warm bed
Like the one where I laid my head
Those nights we never got too much sleep
Guess I need a little help
Something that’ll turn down the neon lights
Cause it’s gettin’ hard to tell
If something’s gonna turn out alright
Just need a little help
To help get me through tonight
Repeat Chorus
